MANDEM (contemporary), resin print on wood titled, "Cthulhu Lies." Signed in metallic ink to the back, and dated 2012.

"This image was inspired by the intersection of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, the ancient stories of Tiamat, the many stories of mad saints, and feminist literary theory about gender and madness. Lovecraft's descriptions of Cthulhu have always reminded us very much of the stories of Tiamat, but of course Tiamat is a primeval goddess. The association of women with madness/hysteria suggests a regendering of the mythos of the sleeping old god(dess?). But the figure here is fragile and seems imperiled... This image explores the ambiguity of power and victimhood; as a suggestivist piece, it leaves the resolution of the image to the viewer." - The artist's statement on the original painting

Fronted by M. Arendsee, MANDEM is an artist conglomerate with an extensive exhibition and publication history. They work in a variety of media to create art that is simultaneously disruptive and beautiful. Their work on the visceral body, gender, and childhood is in critical dialogue with art history, religious iconography / mythology, and various -punk aesthetics.
