Isham G. Harris (1818-1897) was born in Franklin County, Tennessee. He served in the Tennessee Senate from 1847 to 1849, and then in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1849 to 1853. He was elected Governor of Tennessee in 1857 and held the position until 1862 when Union troops took control of Tennessee and U.S. President Abraham Lincoln appointed Andrew Johnson as the state's military governor. For the remainder of the war, Harris was the aide-de-camp for Confederate generals Joseph E. Johnston, Braxton Bragg and others. From 1877 to 1897, he served as the U.S. Senator from Tennessee.
