Carrie Nation prohibition metal hatchet souvenir with red, white and blue ribbon. Length approximately 3.75".
Carrie Nation (1846-1911) was an American prohibitionist and a member of the temperance movement in the early 20th century. Nation was born in Kentucky and later moved to Kansas, where she founded a local chapter of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). In 1900, she began leading "hatchetations" in which she and other female prohibitionists would enter saloons and smash the alcohol and facilities with hatchets. She was also active on the lecture circuit speaking about the issue of prohibition. Nation sold souvenirs, including miniature hatchets, to fund her activism and speeches.
