Brummett Echohawk (American, 1922-2006) Oil painting on canvas titled "1873 - Massacre Canyon, Nebraska" by artist Brummett Echohawk, 1981. The painting depicts the battle between the Pawnee and the Sioux near the Republican River in Massacre Canyon, Nebraska, on August 5, 1873. It is described as the last battle between Great Plains Indians in North America. Framed size: 44 x 32 in. Painting size: 35.5 x 23.5 in. Gold-painted wooden frame with engraved name plate on the frame under the canvas. The artist signed and dated the painting in the bottom right corner. Echohawk (1922-2006) was a Native American artist who served in the 45th Infantry Division during World War II. He received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and a Congressional Gold Medal. After the war he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago.
