René Portocarrero (Cuban, 1912-1985) ink and watercolor on paper, portrait of a woman in the style of an Aztec codex. Signed and dated 1978 in the lower left corner. Portocarrero studied at "San Alejandro" briefly before leaving to learn by his own means. He became well known during the "Vanguardia" era of Cuban modern art as a painter, sculptor, ceramicist, scenic designer and book illustrator, having contemporaries like Amelia Peláez.

Provenance: From the collection of Cuban sculptor, Fausto Ramos, who also acted as director at the famed Cuban art institute, "San Alejandro" or Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, from 1962-1963.
