Emil Nolde (German, 1867-1956), watercolor on paper depicting an arrangement of flowers. Signed Nolde in the lower right corner. While not dated, this painting is consistent with work Nolde made in the 1940s and '50s. During the late 1930s, Nolde was among the artists in Germany whose work was removed by the Nazis from German museums and placed in the "Degenerate Art" exhibition in Munich. This show was meant to disparage the artists and the artwork, crowding 740 works by 120 artists into an ill-fitting space. Nolde's work was posthumously spread around the world, per his instructions.

Provenance: From the collection of Cuban sculptor, Fausto Ramos, who also acted as director of the famed Cuban art institute, "San Alejandro" or Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, from 1962-1963. Includes six photographs of Fausto Ramos and his artwork, one of which has several signatures to verso.

Condition: Loss to top left corner, small tear about 2" from signature.
