Circa 1860 carte de visite of Confederate Colonel Lucius Q.C. Lamar by Charles D. Fredricks & Co. of New York. Approximate size of the image: 2 1/4 x 3 5/8". Includes a packet of research about Lamar compiled by the consignor.

Lucius Q.C. Lamar (1825-1893) was born in Putnam County, Georgia, and later graduated from Emory College. He went on to study law and was admitted to the bar. He practiced law in Oxford, Mississippi, and taught math at the University of Mississippi. He returned to Georgia and served in the state legislature until 1855. After returning to Mississippi, he served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1857 to 1860. He left his position in the legislature to join the Mississippi Secession Convention, and he drafted the state's Ordinance of Secession to withdraw from the Union at the beginning of the Civil War. Lamar served as a soldier during the war and was promoted to the rank of colonel, but he suffered a stroke that ended his military career in 1862. President of the Confederate States Jefferson Davis then appointed him as special commissioner to Russia. After the war, Lamar returned to his Mississippi law practice and to teaching. He was elected to the Mississippi House in 1873, and then to the state senate in 1877. He was appointed U.S. Secretary of the Interior in 1885, and then served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1888 until his death in 1893.
